To strengthen the safety production defense and enhance emergency response capabilities for unexpected incidents, Henan Yuhua Electro‑Melting Technology Co., Ltd. recently conducted an emergency drill for electro‑melting furnace explosions within the premises of its ChaoHua Industrial Park in Xinmi City, with full participation from all employees across departments and the company’s emergency response team.
Exercise Background
Yuhua Electro‑fused Materials specializes in the production of electro‑fused zirconia–corundum products and operates three 5‑ton electric arc furnaces. High‑temperature molten metal operations pose significant safety risks, including explosions and fires. This drill simulates an explosion triggered by equipment failure during furnace operation, accompanied by a cascade of hazards—high‑temperature molten metal leakage, fire, and personnel injuries—mirroring real‑world high‑risk production scenarios.
Drill process
1. Hazard Alarm: When on-site operators detect an abnormality in the electrofusion furnace accompanied by loud noises and flames, they shall immediately halt operations and promptly report to the Emergency Command Center, providing details on the accident location, the nature of the hazard, and the status of personnel.
2. Emergency Response: Upon receiving the report, the Command Center immediately activated the “Special Emergency Plan for Electric Furnace Explosions,” issued emergency directives, and simultaneously shut off the relevant power and gas supplies throughout the plant to prevent the incident from escalating.
3. Group-based handling
◦ Alert and Evacuation Team: Rapidly establish a security perimeter, set up warning signs, and systematically evacuate personnel at the scene and in the surrounding area to designated safe assembly points. Conduct headcounts and report the results.
◦ Firefighting and Emergency Response Team: Don protective gear, deploy dry‑powder fire extinguishers, fire hoses, and other equipment to extinguish visible flames on site, contain the spread of high‑temperature molten material, and prevent secondary explosions.
◦ Medical Rescue Team: Provide emergency care to simulated casualties, including wound management, hemostasis, and bandaging, and safely transport them to the temporary medical station.
◦ Logistics Support Group: Ensure the supply of emergency materials and maintain unimpeded communications, while preparing for on-site cleanup and follow-up handling.
4. Exercise Closure: Once the emergency has been brought under control, the command center confirms that the site is safe and declares the emergency over; each team compiles its findings and conducts a post‑exercise review and summary.
Purpose and Significance of the Drill
• Evaluate the scientific soundness and operational feasibility of the company’s emergency response plan for electric furnace explosions, and refine the emergency response procedures.
• Enhance employees’ awareness of safety precautions and their ability to respond to emergencies, ensuring they are proficient in critical skills such as sounding the alarm, conducting evacuations, and performing initial fire suppression.
• Strengthen the coordination and collaboration among all departments and emergency response teams to ensure rapid interagency coordination and efficient handling of emergencies.
• Implement the principal responsibility for workplace safety, prevent and mitigate major safety risks associated with high-temperature molten-metal operations, and ensure the safety of employees’ lives and the enterprise’s property.
