AZS fused cast bricks, also known as fused cast zircon corundum bricks, are a type of high-performance refractory material. Here is a detailed introduction to AZS fused cast bricks:
1. Naming and Composition
- Naming: AZS is an abbreviation for the three chemical components (Al2O3, ZrO2, SiO2) arranged in order of their content in the Al2O3-ZrO2-SiO2 ternary phase diagram, where Al2O3 is represented by A, ZrO2 by Z, and SiO2 by S. For example, the abbreviation for the 33# cast zircon corundum brick is AZS-33#, while 36# and 41# are AZS-36# and AZS-41#, respectively.
- Composition: AZS fused cast bricks are mainly composed of pure alumina powder, zirconia (approximately 65% ZrO2), and silica (approximately 34% SiO2), which are melted at high temperatures in an electric melting furnace and then poured into molds to cool.
2. Manufacturing Process
- Selected zircon sand and industrial alumina powder are mixed in a certain ratio (usually 1:1), with a small amount of Na2O (added in the form of sodium carbonate) and B2O3 (added in the form of boric acid or borax) as flux.
- After mixing evenly, the mixture is melted at high temperatures (such as 1800~2200℃) and cast into shape.
- After cooling, it is cut and processed into AZS fused cast bricks with specific shapes and sizes.
3. Structure and Performance
Structure: The rock phase structure of AZS fused cast bricks consists of a the corundum and zircon, along with a glass phase. From a phase perspective, it is a eutectic of corundum and zircon, with the glass phase filling the crystalline spaces between them.
Performance:
- High Temperature Resistance: Capable of withstanding long-term use in high-temperature environments without deformation or damage.
- High Strength and High Compressive Resistance: Exhibits excellent mechanical properties and compressive strength.
- Excellent Thermal Shock Resistance: Able to withstand rapid temperature changes without cracking or breaking.
- High Bulk Density and Thermal Conductivity: Possesses high bulk density and good thermal conductivity.
- Good Wear Resistance and Acid Resistance: Capable of maintaining a long service life in harsh environments.
- Alkali Corrosion Resistance: Has strong resistance to alkaline substances.
4. Application Fields
Due to its excellent performance, AZS fused cast bricks are widely used in various high-temperature industrial fields, such as:
- Glass Industry: Mainly used as refractory materials for glass melting furnaces and glass electric kilns, especially in areas subject to severe erosion and scouring, such as melting pools.
- Steel Industry: Used in high-temperature and scouring-resistant areas such as troughs in steel production.
- Soda Ash Industry: Used as refractory materials for soda ash kilns.
5. Casting Methods
The casting methods for AZS fused cast bricks vary based on application requirements and process characteristics, mainly including:
- Ordinary Casting Method: Suitable for the manufacture of AZS fused cast bricks with general requirements, but may produce larger shrinkage holes.
- Inclined Casting Method: Suitable for the manufacture of long bricks, capable of concentrating shrinkage holes at one end of the product, improving the density of the product.
- Quasi Shrinkage Hole-Free Casting: Similar to shrinkage hole-free casting, but the upper part of the brick may retain a small amount of shrinkage holes.
- Shrinkage Hole-Free Casting Method: Capable of completely eliminating shrinkage holes, resulting in uniform composition and dense structure of the product.
In summary, AZS fused cast bricks are high-performance refractory materials with excellent properties and a wide range of applications. By adjusting different casting methods and process parameters, they can meet the demands for refractory materials in various industrial fields.
